We're using a human-centered design approach to improve the City website. In order to accomplish this goal, we are asking for input from the community to help us decide where to focus our efforts.

Human-centered design is—according to Don Norman, author of The Design of Everyday Things—"an approach that puts human needs, capabilities, and behavior first, then designs to accommodate those needs, capabilities, and ways of behaving."

Help us continue to improve the City website. We have made—and are continuing to make—changes to the site, but to truly meet the needs of the community, we need to hear from you.

Goals For This Project

  • Make services easier to locate and navigate, including improving accessibility and language translations.
  • Establish goals for monitoring and ensuring website content remains user friendly and compliant with WCAG 2.1 accessibility guidelines.
  • Evaluate utilization data, user experience testing results and leverage evolving technology.
  • Ensure the website is responsive to the needs of its visitors by engaging the community, with a focus on underrepresented populations.
  • Update and enforce the existing Web Governance Policy to address content longevity and include a structure for managing website content, including duplicative and outdated information.

Project Timeline

  1. Project Kick-off: February 1, 2022
  2. February - July 2022: Planning, initial research, selection of consultant—Sitecrafting—to help conduct user research and usability testing.
  3. July - August 2022: Conduct workshops to set goals for the project, determine pain points from the perspective of web editors, front-line staff, and an accessibility/inclusion-focused group.
  4. September - November 2022: Conduct community survey and develop tree testing.
  5. December 2022: Conduct tree testing, analyze findings, create wireframes.
  6. December 2022 - January 2023: Develop plan to implement findings and recommendations from usability research data.
  7. March - June 2023: Conduct content audit of City of Bend website with Sitecrafting.
  8. June 2023: Implement new search tool.
  9. August - October 2023: Update top navigation menu, Services page, and create new About page.
