Take precautionary measures in the face of potential disasters. Take the steps to make sure you are safe before, during and after an emergency or natural disaster.
GETTING STARTED
It's easy to become overwhelmed when thinking about getting you and your family prepared for any disaster. But it really does not have to be difficult at all.
You should start your planning with three basic goals:
- Make a disaster plan for your family
- Make a go-bag for each member of your family to survive away from home for at least 72 hours
- Create a one-month supply food/water and other items for your family to survive at home.
1. Disaster Plan
- STAY INFORMED- sign up for Emergency alerts with Deschutes County
- Know social media outlets, news, and websites to get emergency information
- Know your evacuation routes
- Know where you are going to stay if you have to leave your home
- Know how to contact with family/friends
2. Go-bags
- Have 3 days worth of water and high calorie food
- Make a first aid kit
- Consider the 5 P's for evacuation
- people- this includes pets
- Prescriptions- medications, medical equipment, hearing aids, and eyeglasses
- Papers- important documents, insurance cards
- Personal needs- clothes, phones, chargers, cash, toiletries
- Priceless items- pictures, mementos, and other valuables
3. One-month supplies
- Start collecting non-perishable food items and water jugs
- Have extra batteries and flashlights available
- Purchase extra toiletries items including over the counter medication
- Lay aside items bit by bit
