SROs walk through a school hallway

The Bend Police Department School Resource Officers (SROs) are sworn police officers embedded in Bend-La Pine Schools within the city limits of Bend. The SRO position is a special assignment position within the Department, similar to the detective division or the traffic division, in which officers apply internally and are selected.

Building positive relationships through Community-Oriented Policing

The SROs take pride in working collaboratively with school administrators, teachers, students, parents and the communities that surround the schools to achieve a safe learning environment. Building positive, everyday relationships with these community members helps ensure trust and partnership so students can reach their fullest potential. SROs work hard to bridge the gap between law enforcement and youth so they feel safe going to officers for help. The connections made at this age help build long-lasting relationships between students and law enforcement well after students graduate.

Just some of the roles and services SROs provide are:

  • Educator
  • Informal counselor/mentor
  • Law enforcement officer
  • Role model
  • Coach/cheerleader
  • Mediator
  • Lunch/basketball buddy
