Street Sweeping

The City of Bend’s Street Sweeping program is committed to providing a clean, healthy environment for our residents.

The program employs three Street Sweeper Operators who are responsible for clearing 908 lane miles within the city. The sweeping program successfully removes 7500 cubic yards of debris from our city streets each year. Street Sweepers remove visible debris such as leaves, pine needles and paper that collect in gutters, clogs catch basins and can flood streets after heavy rains. Most importantly, street sweepers effectively remove toxic particles and pollutants left behind by passing vehicles, discarded waste, pesticides and other toxins that can be carried by water runoff through our Stormwater System into local rivers, ponds and other waterways.

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Sweeping Frequency

In an effort to keep our commitment to clean water and provide equitable service citywide, the street sweeping program is unable to take residential requests. Street sweepers will only be re-routed for emergencies.

AREA	SEASON	FREQUENCY
Downtown Bend	March – October	Monthly between the hours of 4 a.m. – 7 a.m.
Arterial & Collectors	March – October	Monthly between the hours of 4 a.m. – 7 a.m.
Residential Streets	March – October	Every other month between the hours of 7 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Bike Lanes	March – October	Bike lanes on arterials and collectors are swept while the street is swept.
Seasonal Events	March – October	Bike races, parades, etc.
Emergency	Year Round	Calls from Bend Police Department and 911-Dispatch have priority and will take precedence over sweeping schedules and seasonal events, regardless of time or season.

At this time we are unable to take residential requests.

Street Sweeping Seasonal Demands

Spring (March-May)

Removal of sanding rock and heavy vegetation

Summer (May-October)

Regular street sweeping schedule.
After spring clean-up, sweepers follow a regular routing system through the 4 quadrants in Bend; North-South-East-West

Fall (October-December)

Heavy leaf falls and intermittent sweeping if weather and freezing temps allow

Winter (December-March)

To avoid damaging equipment, street sweepers are not used when temperatures drop below freezing

How Can Residents Help Street Sweepers?

By removing common obstacles, you can help maximize street cleaning efforts:

Remove parked vehicles, motorhomes, trailers, boats, etc. To report abandoned vehicles please call 541-693-6911.
Trim tree branches, overgrown shrubs and bushes away from curb line encroaching in Right-of-Way.
Remove basketball hoops from street
Relocate garbage and recycles bins from street
Clear large sticks & branches from roadway as they can clog and jam the sweepers operating system
Remove grass or weeds growing in the gutter
Move landscape and building material out of street
Do not place debris in street such as blowing grass clippings, pine needles or yard waste into the street.
