HISTORY

In 1923 the City of Bend was faced with contamination of its primary surface water supply from the Deschutes River. The construction of upstream reservoirs were creating significant algae blooms during the summer which resulted in serious water quality issues in Bend. The privately owned water company at the time, Bend Water Power and Light, became overwhelmed with the legal, engineering and capital requirements of finding a new supply. The City of Bend stepped in, purchased the system and together the community supported creation of the Bend Municipal Watershed.

Since 1926, with a joint agreement with the US Forest Service, we have been fortunate to have a federal partner in the continuing production and delivery of safe, secure and pristine surface water which is our primary supply, delivered to our system by gravity. Though during peak summer demand for irrigation, we now enjoy the added security of a 2nd source, groundwater, from the Deschutes Aquifer. PROWELL SPRINGS DIVERSION

This is the location of the diversion structure that diverts spring flow into Bridge Creek, located high in the Bend Municipal Watershed at 6300 feet. There are four gaging points that each include flow and temperature.

BRIDGE CREEK INTAKE

In addition to the diverted flow monitoring that is part of the special use permit data, this gaging station is designed to measure the flow and temperature going past the City of Bend intake on Bridge Creek, located about a quarter mile from the confluence with Tumalo Creek.
