The Newport Corridor Improvements Project timeline has changed and the City now expects the 9th Street and Newport Avenue roundabout to be completed in mid-September. Some City infrastructure projects are seeing COVID-19 related impacts which have led to some unanticipated delays. In addition to the Newport project, construction on the Empire Corridor Improvements Project and the Columbia Roundabout Improvements Project have been impacted. We are still updating timelines are still in development for the Empire Corridor Improvements Project and the Columbia Roundabout Improvements Project.

Parrell Road and Reed Lane Crossing

Construction on the latest project in the City’s Neighborhood Street Safety Program has been completed.

The new marked crosswalk at Parrell Road and Reed Lane has a small traffic safety island and includes signs and overhead LED street lighting. On-street parking remains but is restricted near the intersection to improve sightlines from Reed Lane to Parrell Road and improve the visibility of the crosswalk. Pavement markings were also added on Reed Lane to improve turning movement safety at the intersection.

2020 Transportation Service Request

Map of community service requests

The City of Bend recently launched a new interactive reporting tool, which provides summary data on all 2020 Transportation Service Requests received by the City .

Service requests are submitted by community members who have transportation questions or come across an issue on City streets such as crosswalks, parking, speeds and/or signage. The reporting tool shows the transportation-related service requests using points on a map. Each point provides information on the type of request, the date the request was submitted, and the resolution offered. This data can be filtered by Neighborhood Association and/or submission date, which will update the map accordingly.

To access the reporting tool or to learn more about service requests, please visit the Transportation and Mobility webpage

BEND CITY COUNCIL UPDATES

Managed Camps

Developing managed homeless camps will help the City respond to community requests to address homelessness. Councilors have directed staff to identify publicly-owned land that could be used for managed homeless camps. Options are limited but staff are evaluating available, publicly-owned land to provide a safe place for unhoused community members. Current options include a site off NE 9th Street near First Presbyterian Church and a site on South Highway 97 near Les Schwab Tire Center.

See www.bendoregon.gov/homelessness to learn more about a variety of efforts the City is involved with related to supporting homelessness solutions.

Fireworks

The City Council ratified a local emergency declaration prohibiting the use of all fireworks within Bend city limits through Dec. 1, 2021. The emergency declaration identifies ongoing drought conditions and extreme fire risk as the need for this additional fire prevention measure. The prohibition on fireworks use aims to preserve public safety and mitigate fire risk until the Council is able to consider a permanent prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks in Bend later this year.

WELCOMING WEEK

SAVE THE DATE! Welcoming Week 2021 will take place September 10-19.

The City of Bend is excited to join numerous community partners in celebrating Welcoming Week, a series of community-organized events that highlight the principles of inclusion and create communities that prosper because everyone feels welcome.

Welcoming Week is typically a series of community events that raise awareness about Bend’s status as a Welcoming City and the benefits of welcoming everyone, including immigrants and refugees. On June 21, 2017, the Bend City Council unanimously supported a resolution for the City of Bend to become a Welcoming City. Participation in Welcoming Week is one of the requirements for recognition as a Welcoming City.

Keep an eye on the Welcoming Week webpage in the coming weeks as we announce the events for this year.
