This busy route connects Bend’s west side, downtown and core area. Traveling along Greenwood Avenue can be difficult when walking, biking or rolling (using a wheelchair or other mobility device) and can be a stressful route to drive. The project will make important improvements on Greenwood Avenue, creating safer travel for pedestrians, bicyclists and cars. The project will also include the replacement of an aging waterline on Second Street, a much-needed infrastructure upgrade.

Updates to Greenwood Avenue, from Wall Street to NE Second Street, will be completed in phases. The first phase begins July 29 with a “quick-build”. The quick-build is a pilot project with surface treatments that will be evaluated for a year before deciding the eventual full-build construction next summer. It’s important that we know how these updates are working for all corridor users, and we will be asking for extended public input to inform any long-term improvements.

We have already heard from several people that the portion of Greenwood between Second and Fourth (outside of the quick-build project area) feels unsafe for people on bikes. The intersection of Third Street and Greenwood Avenue is where the city street turn into Highway 20. This means it is under ODOT control and they must be involved in any improvements. The City is working to coordinate future changes on this portion of Greenwood. 

The pilot project includes:

  • Painted curb extensions and new safer protected crosswalks with a median island. (Reduces crashes with pedestrians by 31%.)
  • Buffered bike lane. (Reduces crashes with bikes by 47%.)
  • Reduction of travel lanes for cars to one in each direction with a dedicated left turn lane. (Reduces crashes by 29%.)

  • Accessible ADA parking spaces.
  • Safer, wider, buffered parking on the south side of Greenwood Avenue.
  • New crosswalks to access parking on side streets.
