Depending on the characteristics of a sign, it is classified as either temporary or permanent. The permitting process is different for each type. Additionally applications may be made for sign plans, variances and adjustment to code. The information below can help explain the differences and which service area to choose in the Online Permit Center Portal to begin the application.

PERMANENT SIGNS

  • Freestanding signs
  • Signs on buildings
  • Signs on awnings and canopies attached to a building
  • Illuminated signs

 

To apply for a permanent sign permit:

Returning users with an Online Permit Center Portal Account:

  1. Sign in to your Portal Account.
  2. Click 'Apply' under the Building, SDC Estimates and Permanent Signs service area.
  3. Choose Sign Application for Permanent Sign(s) as the Application Type.

TEMPORARY SIGNS

  • Banners
  • Portable signs not attached to a structure or the ground (A-frame, sandwich boards)
  • Land development signs

To apply for a temporary sign registration:

Returning users with an Online Permit Center Portal Account:

  1. Sign in to your Portal Account.
  2. Click 'Apply' under the Business Registration, Licensing and Temporary Signs service area.
  3. Choose Specialty License or Program as the Licensing Type.
  4. On the next step you’ll choose the type of temporary sign registration you’re applying for:
    • Land Development Sign
    • Portable Sign
    • Portable Sign in the Downtown District
    • Temporary Banner

Sign Variances, Adjustments, and/or Revisions 

To apply for:

  • An adjustment to standards of criteria in the Sign Code
  • Sign plan or sign plan revisions
  • Variances to standards in the Sign Code

Returning users with an Online Permit Center Portal Account:

  1. Sign in to your Portal Account.
  2. Click 'Apply' under the Planning & Historic service area.
  3. Choose Sign as the Project Type.
  4. On the next step you’ll choose the type you’re applying for:
    • Adjustment to standards
    • Sign Plan (comprehensive/master plan)
    • Sign Plan revision to major (3 or more signs)
    • Sign Plan revision to minor (2 or fewer signs)
    • Sign Variance
