There are a number of benefits to owning a designated historic resource:
- Environmental: Preserving irreplaceable cultural resources, promoting sustainability practices by conserving our limited environmental resources and recovers the worth of past energy investment.
- Cultural: Historic preservation is the visual and tangible conservation of cultural identity connected to local architecture. By preserving historic structures we are able to share the very spaces and environments in which the generation before us lived.
- Economic: Studies throughout the US have consistently reported that historic properties appreciate significantly faster than comparable non-historic properties. When selling or purchasing property, understanding the significance of historic property will allow the value of the property to remain high. The standards set forth in the Historic Preservation Code usually help raise property values as investors can be assured that the historic nature of the property or district, will remain intact.
- Financial: The State Historic Preservation offers Federal tax credits and a 10-year 'freeze' of property's assessed value for Nationally listed historic resources. In addition, there are a number of public and private foundations that offer grants for historic preservation of historic resources.
