City Council Goal Setting Meeting

“Why I Run…
• Each member of the Council will be asked to share insights on why they run (or keep running!) for public office – and what they love and are frustrated by as they serve the community.
Agenda Item Outcome: Learn your colleagues’ motivation as they join you in serving the City.
The Transition: From Campaigning to Governing
• The 2018 election brought the City’s first directly elected Mayor, ushered in two new City Councilors, and a third was appointed to fill Mayor Russell’s seat in January. We will discuss the transition from campaigning to governing and work to address any issues that need to be resolved for the group to work productively together.
Agenda Item Outcome: Come together as a body to govern the community.
Governing Together
• We will explore a series of questions sharing your individual thoughts on what it means to govern well together.
Agenda Item Outcome: Develop an understanding of each individual’s various hopes for the success of the governing body.
The Council-Staff Partnership
• Overview of the Council-Staff Partnership
• Council Liaison Assignments
• Council Subcommittee Structure
• Increased resources for Council communication and committee support
Agenda Item Outcome: Establish a foundation and structure for doing the business of governance.
The Ideal Colleague
• We will consider how different groups might describe an “ideal” member of the City Council.
Agenda Item Outcome: Empathy for the perspective of various constituencies as the individuals fulfill their roles as City Councilors.
Parting Thoughts/Adjourn
• As the first part of the retreat comes to a close, each participant will be asked to share a parting thought on how they feel about the work done that day.
