Budget Committee
The Budget Committee reviews the City Manager’s proposed budget, gathers public input, and recommends a budget for City Council adoption. The committee helps ensure public funds are used responsibly and transparently.
Next Meeting
All Budget Committee meetings are open to the public. Community members have the opportunity to ask questions, provide comments, and learn more about how City resources are allocated. Public participation helps ensure the budget reflects community needs and priorities.
Next Meeting: Spring 2027
What We Do
The Budget Committee plays an important role in the City’s budget process. As required by Oregon budget law, the committee includes all seven City Councilors and an equal number of appointed community members.
The committee:
- Reviews the City Manager’s proposed biennial budget
- Receives the budget message, which explains the proposed budget and significant financial changes
- Holds public meetings and accepts community input
- Discusses and recommends changes to the proposed budget when needed
- Approves the budget before forwarding it to City Council for final adoption
- Approves the property tax rate that is certified for collection
Why This Work Matters
The City’s budget guides how public funds are invested in services, infrastructure, public safety, transportation, and other community priorities. The Budget Committee adds an extra layer of public review by bringing together elected officials and community members to evaluate spending plans before they are adopted. This process promotes transparency, accountability, and informed decision-making.
Members and Membership
The Budget Committee consists of 14 members: seven City Councilors and seven appointed community members. Oregon budget law requires that the number of appointed community members equal the number of members serving on the governing body.
Community members serve four-year terms and are subject to the City of Bend’s term limit policy, which allows a maximum of two terms or six years, whichever is greater. City Councilors serve on the committee for the duration of their elected term.
