Bend Bikeway Project Update – January 2, 2025
The following update was included as part of the Dec. 16 – Jan. 2, 2025 Informational Open House:
- Spring 2024 Open House Feedback: Feedback collected during our Spring 2024 Open House event helped finalize the Alternatives Analysis phase of design. A huge thanks to those who provided their input! Open House Summaries and the Alternatives Analysis Report can be found on this website (click on the tab below).
- Design Contract Amendment: Based on public feedback, the status of partner projects and the impacts of identified improvements in the Alternatives Analysis, additional design services were required to meet the project’s goals. A design contract amendment was approved by City Council in June 2024, allowing the team to continue designing these crosstown routes. Major additions to the project’s design scope include:
- 15th Street Shared Use Paths: The alignment in this area, from Ferguson Road to Wilson Avenue, was originally planned to follow a Bend Parks and Recreation District Canal Trail project, the existing Larkspur Trail, and a trail connection planned by the Wildflower development. Due to updates from these projects and the community’s desire for direct routes, the project is now designing shared use paths adjacent to 15th Street. Design concepts for 15th street incorporates the recommended cross section widths outline in the 15th Street Memorandum.
- Butler Boyd Intersection: Originally, the scope was to develop a preferred concept for this intersection. The team is now tasked with completing the design of a protected intersection, planned to be constructed along with the Butler Market Key Route Project’s improvements west of 8th Street. Target construction start is Spring 2026.
- Street Illumination: Street illumination will be added at seven intersection crossing locations: 14th and Cumberland, 15th and Galveston, 6th and Revere, 6th and Olney, Delaware and Wall, Delaware and Bond, and Georgia and Harriman.
- Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs): RRFBs will be installed at the intersections of Delaware and Wall, and Delaware and Bond.
- Speed Reduction Improvement: Speed reduction improvements will be made near the intersection of 15th and Galveston.
- Additional Support: Added permitting, right-of-way, and construction staging support are required to design improvements across the project’s footprint.
- Franklin (5th Street to 8th Street): The City’s team has walked the corridor with an arborist and some neighbors to ensure necessary safety improvements in the public right-of-way preserve natural resources as best as possible. Improvements between 5th Street and 8th Street will be constructed along with the Midtown Crossings project’s improvements along Franklin Avenue between Harriman and 5th Street, with a target construction start date of Fall 2025.
- Construction Impacts and Schedules: The team is currently working to confirm the impacts of construction on nearby properties and to finalize construction schedules for the many planned improvements. Please stay tuned for more updates.
- City Crews Improvements: The team is finalizing plans for improvements to be constructed by City Crews. Look out for more information on these plans as Winter Operations wind down this Spring. City Crews plan to install Wayfinding Signage, Modal Filters, and Neighborhood Greenways along the routes.
- Additional Funding Opportunities: The project team continues to pursue additional funding opportunities to help construct this project and is hopeful to learn more about the status of these pursuits in 2025.
