Newport Corridor Improvements Project Update – February 11, 2022

SAFETY FIRST

Construction equipment is preparing the subgrade on Newport Avenue. This means an increase in heavy equipment activity between Juniper Street and College Way. Pedestrians should follow the designated routes and avoid entering the job site at all costs. We have seen pedestrians entering the site and even walking behind heavy equipment as they are operating. The job site needs to be clear of all members of the public to maintain our safety protocols.

Construction will transition to the southern side of the 12th Street & Newport Avenue intersection.

There will be a flagger stopping traffic intermittently at the 9th Street roundabout over the upcoming weeks. These additional safety measures will allow space for large trucks to enter the construction area. The roadway will reopen quickly after the trucks have cleared.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE

Arborists will be performing air spading on Saturday, February 18. This work is expected to last half the day and will be done on Newport Avenue, between 9th Street and 10th Street.

During construction, excavated trenches can be as deep as 15 feet. Installation of shoring devices to stabilize the walls of the trenching allows for crewmembers to replace storm, sewer, and water lines.
