Preventing Sewer Backups

Each year a number of Bend residents experience the hardship of unnecessary sewer backups into their homes. Yuck, just the thought of it stinks. The good news is that these backups are often preventable if homeowners observe simple sewer maintenance tips.

The City of Bend Public Works Department would like to remind residents that sanitary sewer systems are designed to handle three things: used water, human body waste, and toilet paper. Residents can do some simple things that will help maintain the sewer system.

Actions You Can Take to Prevent Sewer Backups

  • Collect cooking oil and grease in a safe container, let it cool, and dispose of it in the garbage.
  • Place a wastebasket in the bathroom to dispose of garbage. Disposable wipes and personal hygiene products do not belong in the sewer system. (Watch “Will it Flush” video online at www.bendoregon.gov/preventbackup.)
  • Do not plant trees and large shrubs above or near lateral sewer lines and pump stations. Roots seek water and can find it in pipes, where they continue to grow and block sewer lines.
