Bend City Attorney’s Office Seeking Candidates for Extern Program
The Bend City Attorney’s Office is seeking qualified candidates for its extern program.
The extern program offer an excellent opportunity for law students to enhance their education by gaining “hands-on” experience in a variety of practice areas in municipal and civil law. Through the program, externs will gain valuable practical experience while completing meaningful and interesting work. Externs also will learn about the structure and operation of City government, as well as the important and challenging work completed by the City Attorney’s Office.
Externs are expected to produce legal research and prepare memoranda as assigned by the City Attorney, Assistant City Attorney and Associate City Attorney for a variety of legal research areas, which could include: public records law; open meetings law; public contracting; land use for current and long-range planning; code enforcement; real property; human resources and employment; water law; intergovernmental relationships (local, state, federal); public infrastructure (water, sewer, storm water); police and fire department issues. The prospective extern will attend various meetings including City staff meetings, and City Committee or Council meetings, as appropriate.
Qualified candidates should have excellent legal research and writing skills and have a strong academic record. In addition, candidates should be detail oriented, able to prioritize assignments and independently manage a workload, demonstrate good judgment and initiative, and interact effectively with different personalities and work styles.
Must have completed two years of law school or one year in combination with prior relevant work experience.
The City Attorney’s Office offers paid externships and/or for academic credit. Position is full-time, 40 hours per week. There are no benefits available with this position. Position is available on an ongoing basis.
