School and College Safety Reminder

As kids begin to return to school, the Bend Fire Department would like to remind everyone about some simple safety items related to schools:

  • Know Their Way Out: Make sure you child understands the importance of monthly evacuation drills conducted at school. You and your family should develop and practice an emergency escape plan for your home as well.
  • Matches are Tools, Not Toys: Talk to your children about what they should do if they find matches or lighters at school, on the playground, or on the school bus. An adult should be made aware of the items and place them out of the reach of small children.
  • Riding on the bus, seated: Talk to your kids about how to safely ride on the bus, the seats on the bus are designed to best protect a child when they are seated.

For those kids heading off to college this year, some simple and quick reminders to help keep them safe while away from home:

  • Know Their Way Out: Many students will be in new cities and buildings for the first time, make sure they know how to get out safely in the event of an emergency.
  • Smoke Alarms Where They Sleep: Smoke alarms are required in all sleeping areas associated with colleges, make sure they are working properly, if not, bring it to the manager’s attention.
  • Living Safely: Keep combustibles away from heat sources. Keep from over loading power supplies by not plugging too many items into one outlet. Remember to unplug appliances with heating elements when not in use. Do not leave anything cooking unattended. Do not leave lit candles unattended even for a minute. Many university housing complexes ban the use of candles, incense and similar materials, check with the housing manager to see what is allowed.
