Newport Corridor Improvements Project Update – June 17, 2022

SAFETY FIRST

The last week of school is here! When using detour routes, expect more pedestrians at crosswalks and on side streets. Slowly approach intersections where visibility is limited and follow posted speed limits. Please be aware of the construction zone markings and the importance of following all designated pedestrian detours.

The concrete that is being poured over the coming weeks has a specific cure time to provide an optimal life expectancy. Pedestrians should follow all designated routes around the newly formed curbs and sidewalks. The exterior of the concrete may appear dry but could still be curing beneath the surface.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE FOR JUNE 16 – JUNE 23

Segment 2B of the project is closing in on completion. Weather permitting, Newport Avenue from 10th Street to 12th Street will be open to the public on July 1, 2022.

In anticipation of the busy July 4 weekend, the entire Newport Avenue corridor will temporarily be opened to traffic from July 1 until July 5. Please drive carefully, as there will be areas of temporary gravel roadways and construction equipment staged for Segment 2C and Segment 3. On July 6, Newport Avenue will be closed again for Segment 2C & Segment 3 construction (12th Street up to the 14th Street roundabout).

Newport Corridor Improvements Scheduled Construction – Segment 5 (Juniper Street to College Way)

  • Landscaping will continue near sidewalks and planters.
  • There may be intermittent flagging and lane shifts while crews finalize the landscaping.

Newport Corridor Improvements Scheduled Construction – Segment 2B (10th Street to 12th Street)

  • Forming of the concrete driveway aprons and sidewalks.
  • Begin pouring concrete for the driveway aprons and sidewalks.
    • Curing of the concrete will begin and takes roughly 5 to 7 days.
  • Final grading of Newport Avenue begins in preparation for Asphalt.

DETOURS IN EFFECT

Traffic Closures and Changes

  • Newport Avenue, west of 10th Street to 12th Street, is closed.
  • 11th Street, north and south of Newport Avenue, will be local access only.

Temporary Pedestrian Accessibility Route for Segment 2B Construction

If heading eastbound on Newport Avenue:

  • At the east side of 12th Street, head southbound to Milwaukee Avenue. 
  • Turn left on the north side of Milwaukee Avenue to travel eastbound. 
  • Cross 11th Street and continue to the west side of 10th Street.
  • Turn left on 10th Street to travel north to Newport Avenue.
  • Turn right on Newport Avenue, crossing 10th Street to continue traveling eastbound.

If heading westbound on Newport Avenue:

  • At the west side of 10th Street, head south to Milwaukee Avenue. 
  • Turn right to travel west down the northside of Milwaukee Avenue.
  • Cross 11th Street and continue on Milwaukee Avenue to 12th Street. 
  • At the west side of 12th Street, turn right to travel northbound to get back onto Newport Avenue and turn left to continue traveling westbound. 

GENERAL PROJECT NOTES

  • Access to all area businesses along the construction corridor will be maintained.
  • Please do not enter the construction zone before, during, or after hours.
  • Daytime work hours are in effect from 7:00 AM – 6:30 PM.
  • The ‘Tree Preservation and Removal Overview Exhibits’ can be found on the project website. These exhibits provide design details about each tree being removed and where new trees will be planted.
  • There are many construction projects in the area and throughout the City of Bend. Travel safely.

  • EMS, buses, and other delivery/service providers have been included in the project updates distribution list.
  • Please help us spread the word to your clients, customers, and delivery personnel regarding detouring and closures.
