Wilson Avenue Corridor Project Update – April 26, 2024

SAFETY TIPS

As spring begins to bloom, it’s essential to remember that the safety hazards of winter haven’t disappeared entirely.

  • With rain comes the risk of hydroplaning. Hydroplaning occurs when your vehicle tires lose their grip on the pavement, gliding and skidding atop the water – making it hard to brake. To avoid hydroplaning, be patient, maintain a safe speed and brake gradually.
  • Unexpected freezing can occur during the spring season. Expect icy conditions in the mornings and evenings.
  • Be mindful of bikers and children playing outside. Drive slowly and give them space to avoid any unfortunate accidents.

CONSTRUCTION UPDATE:  April 29 – May 3

Stage 2 Improvements: Second Street to Fourth Street

  • Crews will pour concrete islands at the corners of Third Street and Wilson Avenue to create designated spaces for protected intersection features.
  • Work on the stormwater system will be completed for the project.
  • Crews will continue to work on the traffic signal electrical wiring.

TRAFFIC CHANGE IN EFFECT

Traffic light at Third Street and Wilson Avenue is converted to a temporary stop sign during construction.

The traffic signal at Third Street and Wilson Avenue has been temporarily replaced with a stop sign as part of the Wilson Avenue Corridor Project. For those traveling eastbound on Wilson Avenue at the Third Street intersection, the only option will be a right turn to go southbound on Third Street; there will be no left turn option to go northbound on Third Street. The removal of the signal places construction a month ahead of schedule, with completion expected in May.

The new traffic signal will enhance traffic flows and improve both driver and pedestrian safety.

Detour Map

beginning Feb 8, no left turns at Third and Wilson. Full closure on Wilson between 3rd st and 4th st.

The Wilson Avenue Corridor is a multi-phase modernization project that will improve safety and east-west connectivity for all users along Wilson Avenue from Second Street to 15th Street.

Waterline system upgrades are being constructed as part of the project to optimize synergy opportunities.
