Yes, permits expire if inspections are not requested within 180 days, or if there is a lapse between inspections of 180 days. If your project isn’t completed within the specified time frame, you may need to apply for an extension or a new permit.
Inspections are usually required at various stages of the project, such as foundation, framing, electrical, plumbing, and final inspection. Your permit will outline the required inspections.
Inspections can be scheduled online. Make sure to schedule inspections in advance to avoid delays in your project. Find out more here:
Building permits are required for several important reasons:
- Safety: Permits ensure that construction meets our building codes and standards, which are designed to protect the safety of the community. This includes preventing structural failures, fires, and other hazards.
- Quality Assurance: By following building codes, permits help ensure that the work is done correctly and to a high standard. This can prevent costly repairs and issues down the line.
- Property Value: Properly permitted work can increase the value of your property. If you decide to sell your home, having the necessary permits can make the process smoother and more attractive to buyers.
- Future Safety: Permits protect future occupants by ensuring that the building is safe and up to code. This is particularly important if the property changes hands.
