Newport Corridor Improvements Project Update – September 9, 2022

SAFETY FIRST

On September 13th, Cascade Natural Gas will perform pavement restoration work beginning at 4:00 AM near Ogden Avenue and 12th Street. If you have further questions regarding this work, please contact Ben Lisec at 541-213-3059.

With the construction season in full swing, the replacement of aging water mains, transmission pipes, and service lines is becoming a prime focus for neighborhoods around Bend. Occasionally during these projects, homes and businesses are placed on water bypass systems that allow water service to remain uninterrupted through construction. After the pipe replacement is complete and the service lines are re-connected, you may notice a difference in the water coming from your faucet, showers, and hoses.

A slight discoloration or even sediment can be expected, and your water may surge from air pockets flowing through the system. Each of these by-products is very common in water line replacements and is caused by the aging pipes being disturbed after all these decades. There are simple steps you should take as soon as the water pipes are charged and your plumbing is connected to the utility system.

  1. Run the water in your bathtub for a couple of minutes
  2. Run the remaining water spigots in your system for 10-20 seconds.

These steps will release the air pocket in the pipes and clear the pipes of any loosened sediment. If you notice a faucet that has reduced pressure, unscrew the filter off the end of the faucet and clear it of any sediment.

If these steps do not improve your water after a few minutes or your faucet screen is clear, contact the City of Bend – Utility Department at 541-317-3000, extension 2, or the project point of contact immediately.
