Council Adopts Safe Parking Program
On April 7, Council adopted a new “Safe Parking” program. This program enables businesses, nonprofits, and religious or public entities to allow limited overnight parking in vehicles for people experiencing homelessness. Without further City authorization, these entities can allow up to three vehicles overnight, and must provide access to bathrooms, handwashing, and garbage service. These same types of entities can, with City authorization and following notification to immediately surrounding neighbors, allow up to six vehicles and huts or tents for use as temporary shelter, if they provide case management or supervision and bathrooms, handwashing, and garbage service. In coordination with the City, public entities may allow more than six vehicles, huts or tents. The Safe Parking program does not change the limitations on parking in the right of way or along public streets.
