Bend Fire High School Programs

Bend Fire & Rescue helps high school students explore a career in fire and emergency services by offering programs that give them a real-world look at the work first responders do in the Bend community.

Camp Fire Axe is a four-day summer camp held each year for high school students ages 16–19 who are interested in a hands-on experience to learn what it’s like to work as a firefighter or paramedic in their community.

Students will learn from professional firefighter/paramedics from Bend Fire & Rescue about topics such as:

• How fires behave and how emergency teams respond
• Fire engines, ladder trucks, and how to use hoses
• Rescue techniques like getting people out of cars, using ropes, and searching for victims
• Trauma care, CPR, and basic first aid skills

Inside Look

• 6:30 a.m. Physical Training
• 7:00 a.m. Breakfast
• 8:00 a.m. Class Begins
• Morning Session: Hands-on training activity and/or lecture
• Noon(ish) Lunch Break
• Afternoon Session: Hands-on training activity and/or lecture
• 5:30 p.m. Class Dismissed

Commitment

$250 registration fee

• Scholarships are available through the Camp Fire Axe application
• Registration fee is due by the first day of camp
• Cost includes breakfast, lunch, snacks and drinks

What to bring to camp

• Water
• Workout clothing and shoes
• Extra clothing for after morning workout

Students Preparing a Responsible Community (SPARC)

SPARC is a year-long internship program for high school students who want to see what goes on behind the scenes at a fire department.

SPARC interns get to follow Bend Fire & Rescue staff throughout the year and learn about the different parts of the department, including Operations, Prevention, and Emergency Medical Services.

Students who are enrolled in high school can earn school credit for being part of this program.
