Galveston Corridor Safety Project Construction begins mid-June

Construction is set to begin on the Galveston Corridor during the week of June 15, weather dependent. The project will be completed in three phases of construction. The first phase of work this summer will maintain two-way traffic on Galveston Avenue. Early in the project’s development, the community provided meaningful input that helped shape initial concepts. Following more recent guidance and direction from the City Council, plans have been updated to better align with current priorities including enhancing safety, maintaining budget and reducing construction impacts on local businesses.

Phase 1 improvements, expected to begin the week of June 15, include replacing several driveway and alley approaches on Galveston Avenue. This phase will be complete before the end of summer. During this phase of construction, two-way traffic will be maintained on Galveston. The driveway work will have short-term impacts in limited, specific sidewalk and bike lane areas. Access to businesses will be maintained.

Phase 2 of the project will be in the vicinity of NW 17th Street and is scheduled in the fall 2026. This includes:

  • Building a raised crossing at 17th Street to calm traffic and improve safety. Work will take approximately a month and will require flagging.
  • Relocating a water system pressure‑reducing valve to support long‑term infrastructure reliability. Work will take approximately a month and will be shoulder work, outside of the travel lanes.

Phase 3 is scheduled to take place winter 2026 through spring 2027 and will bring the biggest set of upgrades, with major improvements that enhance safety, accessibility and fresh pavement that gives the whole corridor a much smoother, more comfortable roadway surface. Traffic impacts will be minimized as much as possible. Those improvements will include:

  • Raised crossing at 12th Street
  • Median refuge islands at select locations
  • New ADA-compliant ramps at currently non-compliant intersections
  • Replacement of missing or hazardous sidewalk sections
  • Improved street lighting for better visibility and comfort at night
  • Full repaving grind-and-inlay of the asphalt from the bridge through 14th Street, including the roundabout
  • Restriping in alignment with current City standards
