National Fire Prevention Week Oct. 5 – 11
Each year the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) selects an important fire prevention topic to focus on. This year the topic of the week is Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.
Lithium-ion batteries are increasingly found in devices and systems that the public and first responders use or interact with daily. While these batteries provide an effective and efficient source of power, the likelihood of them overheating, catching on fire, and even leading to explosions increases when they are damaged or improperly used, charged, or stored. NFPA offers several resources that provide information to promote safer use of lithium-ion batteries across a wide range of applications.
History of National Fire Prevention Week
The official sponsor of National Fire Prevention Week is the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Each year, this week is recognized along with an important fire prevention topic.
The Great Chicago Fire is credited for the establishment of Fire Prevention Week. The Great Chicago Fire was a devastating fire that occurred on Oct. 8, 1871 in Chicago, Illinois. The fire killed nearly 300 people and left over 100,000 without homes. Not long after this devastating fire, the establishment of Fire Prevention Day was recognized.
Then, in 1911 another significant fire took place in the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in Greenwich Village, New York. This fire furthered our industry knowledge of fire prevention by helping establish fire and workplace safety standards. The Asch Building in which the fire took place, still stands and is being used as part of New York University’s campus, recognized as a National Historic Landmark.
President Calvin Coolidge officially proclaimed the observance of Fire Prevention Week in 1911, to be held annually during the week of Oct. 9, coinciding with The Great Chicago Fire. Some states, like Oregon, recognize the entire month of October as Fire Prevention Month.
