Help create Bend’s most comprehensive tree inventory!

The goal is to know where City trees are, which will improve our ability to maintain our trees and know where new ones can be planted.

What is the Bend Tree Project?

The Bend Tree Project is a volunteer-based community effort to count trees along city streets, in the right-of-way or otherwise on city property. The data will become an important inventory as part of the city’s GIS database – a vital tool for better managing how the city looks the urban forest in the future. We need to know what we have, where it is, what condition its in and what the maintenance needs are as a starting point.

How Volunteering Works

Volunteers will identify, measure and assess individual trees and enter them into a GIS database using their own smart phones in the field. Volunteers will work in teams of 2-3 people. Training will be given at the beginning of the project and staff will be available throughout the project. Materials and PPE needed for the work will be supplied. Volunteers will need to download a couple of simple apps on to their smart phones to do the data collection.

Anyone can be a volunteer scientist – no special skills are required! You will need to be comfortable being outdoors and walking a mile or two each time.

The city is looking for volunteers who can make a consistent time commitment of 2-3 hours every week over 3 months.

Important Documents for Volunteers

We highly recommend you attend the training that will teach you how to evaluate and identify trees. The trainings will be held on the following days:

  • Saturday, May 2 at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall
  • Sunday, May 3 at 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at City Hall
