Bend Bikeway Update

Greetings!

We are sending this update to provide a look at the work that has been completed, is in progress, or is planned for the near future to create the Bend Bikeway’s connected and protected cross‑town routes. We also invite you to join us on a bike ride to learn more about some of the new pilot‑program traffic diverters that were recently installed.

The Bend Bikeway Project helps improve safety and connectivity for people who bike, walk, and roll to employment, schools, businesses, parks, trails, and neighborhood amenities.

Thank you for your interest in this project.

Project Construction Updates

Neighborhood Greenways

Projects have been completed to build new neighborhood greenways and to improve safety for walking and biking on the City’s system of Neighborhood Greenways. These projects include:

  • Quick-build curb extensions with asphalt art and lighting upgrades are coming this spring. (Example image right)
  • New Neighborhood Greenways on NW Hartford Avenue, NW Harriman Street and on NE Fifth Street, NE Sixth Street and NE Irving Avenue are currently being constructed.

Bike-activated Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons

Bike activated Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons that automatically detect bikes to activate flashing lights will be installed at Delaware Avenue & Wall Street and Delaware Avenue & Bond Street this spring.

A pedestrian in a crosswalk...These beacons are installed on crossings where there are two through-lanes in the same directions to mitigate the “double-threat” risk that occurs on multi-lane roads when a driver in one lane stops for a pedestrian, but a driver in an adjacent lane fails to stop.

Median Extension

NE Sixth Street and NE Olney Avenue median extension was completed this winter.

Traffic Diverter Pilot Program

Traffic Diverters have been installed in the Old Bend and River West neighborhoods.

Protected Bike Lanes
