Almost 100 years ago, the City of Bend purchased a private water system that was struggling with a contaminated water supply and unable to meet the needs of a new, fast-growing city. Watch the 10-minute video below to learn how careful planning and investment today will ensure that Bend can continue to provide safe and reliable water to customers for the next 100 years. 

The City’s Integrated Water System Master Plan evaluates the condition and capacity of Bend’s water system to serve our growing community over the next 20 years and beyond. This planning work brings together conservation, operations, and economic analyses – the most comprehensive look at our water system yet – to recommend new and existing infrastructure improvements critical to safe and reliable operations of our water system.

We assessed the condition of our entire water system to help identify areas of concern and prioritize investment. That includes the pipes, pumps, wells, and reservoirs we need to deliver clean, safe water from our two sources of supply to customers.

Parts of the system are new, but other parts are showing their age and need maintenance or replacement to continue functioning reliably.

We also looked at Bend’s projected population growth and water demands over the next 20 years to make sure we’re not over or under-sizing our infrastructure.

The good news? With our two sources of supply, Bend is positioned to meet projected water demands in 2040. And with the help of our conservation program, we’ll be able to do even more with less.

We used this information to determine what needs fixing first and where we need resilience improvements in case of a fire or other emergency.

The City’s current rate strategy supports priority projects over the first 5 years to address the most critical needs.

The City’s Water Management and Conservation Plan identifies cost-effective conservation measures to save water and infrastructure dollars. After looking at hundreds of potential water conservation measures, the plan outlines 11 measures with the highest indoor/outdoor water savings potential. Implementing these measures can potentially save $10 million by delaying the need for three new wells and a large reservoir.

Conservation programs have been a City priority for the past decade and despite our population doubling since 2000, our highest water-use day demand is less than it was in 2008. These new, innovative conservation measures build on the City’s successful award-winning WaterWise program, and fit our expanding community and climate.

In Bend, 60 percent of our annual water use is used outdoors for landscape irrigation.
