Hawthorne Crossing
Important Update
ODOT will manage the design and construction of the project due to federal funding requirements. For current information about this project, link to the ODOT project website.
The information below remains available for historical reference.
The Hawthorne Overcrossing bridge design has been selected as a steel truss style structure with mountain theme. This design will provide a dedicated overcrossing for both bicycle and pedestrian traffic, ensuring safe and efficient passage over US 97 and the railroad tracks.
In July 2024 the City heard from over 400 people who participated in the open house for Hawthorne Overcrossing. City Council reviewed the background information including cost, public response and bridge type design renderings in 2024 and 2025. Most recently, after debate and careful consideration, they selected a “Broken Top truss” style option for the future bridge. This option is lower in construction and maintenance costs compared to the single tower cable stay design. It will provide compatibility with future development and is still aesthetically pleasing.
Location
The new bridge will span from Second Street to Hill Street with long straight approaches.
Schedule
Design work for the new pedestrian and bicycle bridge will continue through 2026, and construction is expected in 2026-2027. ODOT will manage the design and construction of the project due to federal funding requirements.
Design
Design highlights of the chosen design layout:
- Best reflects community needs and goals
- Is more affordable than other designs
- Prioritizes visibility and safety, with no angles or corners
- Provides a clear, direct route for walking and biking
- Offers views in all directions from the bridge deck
- Meets standards for universal accessibility
- Is more ADA accessible
- Will include landings within the ramps to give people space to rest on the uphill and slow on the downhill
City Council also discussed the parkway exit at Hawthorne Avenue and decided to close the exit and entrance to the parkway because of safety concerns. This step will be taken in collaboration with ODOT.
